The Black Talon defensive round was only out for 1 year, but it has gained a lot of infamy over the years as one nasty round. All of the media labeling it as a "cop killer" hasn't helped the situation much. To think that media thinks we are dumb enough to think that one type of ammunition is designed to kill a specific person worse than another is pretty pathetic. On real "stopping power" and "knock down factor" the main factor is bullet construction/design and shot placement. All other arguments stop cold against those simple factors. In the strosborg test Barry mentioned, the Black Talon actually came up pretty low. Two factors are needed in a bullet construction for killing game animals. One is expansion and weight retention. The other is penetrating power, and the rest is up to the shooter to make the perfect shot. Factors that cover a bullet designed for stopping humans, are mainly the ability for the projectile to break through the breast plate of an average human (and/or the cranium), and the ability for that bullet to expand and retain weight inside the capacity of an average human body. This means the show must happen within 14 inches. An ideal carry round for a defensive gun has a large energy dump immediately upon entering the body. This is why Glaser rounds are so effective. Many projectiles, while excellently constructed for killing game animals, often expand too slowly to reach full potential inside the human body. There are many books written on this subject and I would encourage you all to do reading on your own.
