I Replied To The “Hi Mum” Scam Just For Fun🤣

The so-called “Hi Mum” scam has been making its rounds recently in Australia. I was targeted as well (which I’ll show you in this video). Apparently, Australians have lost millions of dollars to this scam in recent months, because it’s a scam that preys on our emotions by claiming to be a family member who has lost or forgotten their phone or card. Anyway, here’s my experience with the ‘Hi Mum’ scam. Noting that this took place over about two or three hours.

“Hi mum, I lost my phone. Don’t worry, I got a new one and a new number. You can delete my old number.”

Just noting that I have two young children, both of which do not have a phone. So obviously, I knew from the get-go that this was a scam. The scammers obviously send out hundreds of these messages just waiting to get a bite. But even though it’s a scam, I decided to play along, well, at least in my own sort of amusing way.

“This is Dad😕”
“Oh, sorry dad! I must have mixed up the numbers…”
“That’s okay. BTW, is this Jack or Sophia?”
“Sorry dad, I should have said! It’s Sophia.”
“Hi Sophia, what’s up? (Apart from losing the phone😉)”
“Haha, you’re funny dad😘”, “Actually, I’m okay, but because I changed phone numbers, I’m having problems getting into my bank.”
“Just ring the bank”
“I have! But the bank blocked my online banking for 48 hours due to this new number. I’m a bit stressed because I have an overdue payment…”
“Just ask Steve to pay it”
“Steve’s away on business and I can’t get in contact with him at the moment”
“He still works at Subway, doesn’t he?”
“Yes”
“And he’s away on a business trip?”
“Yes, he recently got promotion”
“Congratulations Steve!”
“Dad, can you please help me out? I don’t know who else to ask😢”
“Okay, I’ll ring you now…”
“Sorry dad, I’m still on phone with insurance company. They make me hold for so long😡”
“Bastards!”
“Yes, they are very big Bastards!😆”, “Dad, can you please help me🥺”
“Ok, ok. What do you need me to do?”
“I just need you to pay my urgent bill for me… then I can pay you back tomorrow or the next day when the bank unlock my account”
“Ok”
“I love you dad💖”
“I love you too Sophia. How much is the bill? What’s it for?”
“It’s $2,762.53. It’s for house insurance. I can send you the payee details now?”
“Can’t you just wait a couple of days till you pay it?”
“No Dad! They said my insurance is already not covered! If I wait any longer and something happens to the house, I’ll lose everything! Please dad😢”
“Why don’t you ask Steve?”
“I told you! Steve is on business trip!”
“With Subway?”
“Yes! He’s new regional manager”
“OK, I’m ringing Steve…”
“Steve changed his number. His new number is: 04** *** ***”
“I just rang Steve’s old number. He’s says he’s at home. Where are you?”
“I told you, I’m on business trip”
“No, you said Steve’s on a business trip!”
“F**K YOU MOM YOU B**CH!”
“Sophia! That’s no way to speak to your father!”
“F**K YOU C**T!”

And that’s my experience with the “Hi Mum” scam.
