Kyiv on New Year's Eve πΊπ¦
New Year's Eve in Kyiv is not what I expected to be doing when I thought about it earlier in the year, but the opportunity popped up to spend a few days in Kyiv over New Year, so I said yes.
New Year's Eve to me is generally pretty dull, or overhyped, too busy and very expensive. Would New Year's Eve in Kyiv be the same?
I met up with Tanya and we ventured to the centre of Kyiv, Ukraine's capital city. It was obviously going to be busy, but over 100,000 people attended the city centre, but oddly, there didn't seem to be any violence. People were drunk but nobody seemed to be acting like do in England, where we fall over, throw up everywhere, start fights and the usual night out stuff which is excelled on New Year's Eve.
How nice did St Sophia's Cathedral and St. Michael's Cathedral look at night?!
The singer was Ruslana who won Eurovision about 10 years ago for Ukraine. Everybody seemed to love her, and she did a good job at getting the crowd going.
It was very cold in Kiev, but we wrapped up well and didn't stand still for too long. It was snowing a bit, but at least it wasn't windy or raining, making New Year's Eve pretty good in Kyiv!
In the video we also take you up to the puppet theatre, where Tanya explains about some of the statues. We walked through the friendship arch area where there was a funfair, but it was pretty empty whilst we were there.
If you're going, you could also take a short walk from the friendship arch to Podil, where there's a large area for the public to be outside, which would be really nice on New Year's Eve and I'm sure they'd have had something good going on. You can see more of Podil and Kyiv in my other Kyiv videos.
I would definitely recommend going to Kyiv for New Year's Eve, and at any point in general. It's one of my favourite cities in the world, obviously, as I keep going back.
Kyiv or ΠΠΈΡΠ² as it's known within Ukraine is called Kiev in English speaking countries. The locals call it Kyiv, but it's perfectly acceptable to call it Kiev. Only people who don't understand what endonyms and exonyms are will get annoyed. Just like Germany/Deutschland - Germans don't get annoyed that we call their country Germany do they.
