Ultimate Jordan tourist attraction road trip 🇯🇴 الأردن‎
We rented a car in Amman, the capital of Jordan and decided to drive to Petra, one of the 7 wonders of the world, before spending the night in Wadi Rum, a protected area, a desert, in a bubble luxotel, which is basically a bubble tent. After waking up in Wadi Rum, we drove to Aqaba for a short stop, checked out the beach then drove to the Dead Sea to float.
Jordan is turning out to be an awesome country. I expected it to be good, interesting and all other things, but it's quickly exceeding all expectations and becoming one of my favourite countries. This is mainly down to the friendliness of the people towards me and Tanya.
Petra was very cool as expected, however, something needs to be done about the amount of times you're harassed whilst trying to enjoy the place. Every corner you turn around, somebody else tries to get you to follow them on a "tour", which you can do for free yourself. Also, unlicensed guides are never a good idea. You can book a real guide from the entrance if you're into taking guides. The leaflet you're given with your ticket states that you should not entertain any child labour, however, throughout Petra, you're approached by children trying to sell you stuff.
Amman is one of my favourite cities. It was very easy to rent a car with a company called Arena car rental. Driving standards in Jordan are really poor. The use of indicators is minimal and drivers barely use the lines on the road. In Amman it's worse than the rest of the country as you will be crashed into if you don't let people push in front of you. We were warned before renting a car that the standards in Amman are so poor. The roads throughout the country are in pretty good condition. Expect to be stopped by police quite often, but just to check your license and stuff. Seems a bit pointless, but they just ask a couple of questions then you continue.
Wadi Rum was very, very cool. The bubble hotel we stayed in was excellent and I'd definitely recommend it. It was ran by a family who were super friendly, it was extremely comfortable and the atmosphere was top.
Aqaba was disappointing. The apparent nice beaches are blocked by hotels, which happens in many countries and should be stopped, but let's be honest, the owners definitely pay corrupt politicians and so on to let them block the 'public' beaches. The beach we were directed to by a taxi driver and some kids was dirty, which is a shame as the red sea is crystal clear. On this beach we were hounded by boat trip salesmen, however, one of them was a Liverpool fan and was happy that he could talk to me about Mo Salah. It's also cool being able to see Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Israel/Palestine from Aqaba.
The dead sea was the main reason we did the road trip. It's such a strange thing to be able to float like that in water without any floatation aids. We found it extremely difficult to find somewhere to get into the Dead Sea, because again, it's blocked by huge hotels. We went into a restaurant inside a mall and one of the staff said we can either pay a hotel to go through (rip off) or we can go to the free beach (he told us it was dirty), which he pointed out to us. When we got to the parking, 3 or 4 kids ran up to us to try to get us to give them money for a guide, for water, for coffee etc. One followed us down the trail to the dead sea and would not leave no matter how much I asked him to and when we got to the Dead Sea, he asked for 5 JD. I only had 1.70 and he tried acting really upset and was saying he deserved 5 for walking next to us down a path. He then asked for 20 before leaving.
Floating was very cool, but it smelt pretty bad around there because of all of the trash. If we had more time, we'd have spent the money to go into a hotel, but we had to hand the car back in at 6pm.
When we walked back to our car, the same kid followed us and demanded more money from us, before I strictly told him to go away. We walked past his parents on the way back up who were friendly and didn't try to ask for anything from us.
Make sure if you're going to the free beach you take a large bottle of water to clean yourself as the salt stays on your skin until you shower. The local government should clean up this free beach and make it actually nice for tourists. There was literally underwear, plastic bottles, food wrappers and all other stuff everywhere you looked. It's a shame. One of the most famous places in the world, full of litter.
