Ultimate Kuala Lumpur Street Food Tour With Local 🇲🇾

I love trying new food and when I visit a country for the first time, I like to try something new and maybe try the national dish of that country.

I arrived in Kuala Lumpur already knowing about some of the dishes they have in Malaysia, but having only tried the versions we get in England, rather than the original stuff in Malaysia, so I got in touch with Alvin who offered to take me and Tonya around a part of Kuala Lumpur that is famous for street food with both locals and hungry foreigners.

The street is full of different restaurants which include Malaysian, Chinese, Vietnamese and all other sorts of cuisines.

On the Malaysian street food tour, we tried so many different Malaysian foods, street snacks, tropical fruits and breads. We tried some sweet bread, savoury bread, a curry puff which is like an empanada - unfortunately it contained potato so I had to spit it out in front of the lady which made me feel awful, but she didn’t seem to care. I’m allergic to potato and have been since my late teens; before I get abuse for that part. I did tell Alvin but he forgot, not a huge problem as I didn’t swallow it.

We also tried two types of noodles made in a street food location that sounds fabricated - it was a blocked off lane where the guy connected the lights in a plastic bag out of some house.

We ate durian, the world’s smelliest food. Durian literally makes people run away because of the smell. Durian smells like rotten trash, but tastes a bit like melon - although it does have a strange aftertaste to it. Not great, not terrible. We tried rambutan which was great, and mangosteen which was also pretty good. There was also some other fruit which I referred to as a grape which was great, but I can’t remember the name.

We tried this super saucy sandwich called roti John, which was an egg sandwich with chilli sauce and stuff. That was actually really good.

We also tried an egg tart, which was more like a creme brûlée, some sort of coconut jam puff and a char Sui pork bun which was absolutely fantastic as you’d expect, if you know what char Sui pork tastes like.

The last thing we tried was called roti tissue, which was a paper thin or tissue thin piece of bread that was coated in ghee butter, sugar and some sort of milk sugar cream. That was pretty good, but although it looked shocking, it was a bit too big. Half the size or like a quarter size, per person, that would be great.

Overall, Alvin took us on a fantastic street food tour around Kuala Lumpur as two foreigners visiting Malaysia for the first time and we both thank him for that. He was a very cool guy and I’d be happy to meet him again.
