The Tuskegee Syphilis Study was a notorious clinical study conducted between 1932 and 1972 involving 600 African-American men in the rural town of Tuskegee, Alabama. The goal of the study was to observe the course of untreated syphilis in these men over a period of 40 years. Despite the fact that a cure for syphilis had been developed in the 1940s, investigators purposely withheld treatment from participants in order to observe the long-term effects of syphilis on their health. As a result, hundreds of men were denied medical care and eventually died from complications related to the disease or its treatment.
