A sheriff has praised a teenage boy who protected his younger sister after they were both attacked and stabbed by their father's girlfriend, who reportedly wanted to "go out in a bang".

Doris Espinoza-Rodriguez, 38, was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, among other charges, according to the Osceola County Sheriff's Office in Florida.

Newsflash obtained a video statement from Sheriff Marco Lopez of the Osceola County Sheriff's Office saying that an argument had broken out over dinner, with the woman at one point reportedly climbing onto a chair holding a knife and shouting that she would "go out in a bang".

The sheriff's office said that she proceeded to stab her partner's 10-year-old daughter, who has not been named, in the neck. Her 14-year-old brother stepped in to defend her, and he was also injured.

Neither of the children has been named.

Sheriff Lopez said in his statement: "He immediately ran in there trying to save the life of his little sister – which he potentially, probably did – and received stab wounds in the process.

"He’s truly a hero. It just goes to show the love of a sibling and how far you’ll go to defend your sister or your brother. My hat really goes off to this young man."

The children's father ran over to take the knife from Espinoza Rodriguez and was also hurt, while his son dialled 911.

The incident took place on Monday, 16th January, with the suspect taken into custody on Tuesday, 17th January.
