Bird of 100 eyes
Great Argus or in its scientific name Argusianus argus is one of the birds found in the Phasianidae tribe. The Great Argus population is spread across Southeast Asia. This species is found in the tropical forests of Sumatra, Borneo and Peninsular Malaysia.
During the breeding season, male birds show off their wing and tail feathers in front of the female birds. The wing feathers are opened to form a fan, showing "hundreds of eyes" in front of their partner. The two main feathers are present on the one meter long tail. When the bird flaps its wings, these long feathers appear to form a giant fan up to 140 cm high. On the wings, dots will appear like hundreds of small eyes that make the body look so beautiful. That is why Great Argus is nicknamed "Bird of 100 Eyes". The species' binomial name was given by Carolus Linnaeus, based on the hundred-eyed giant named Argus in Greek mythology.
