United we stand, divided we fall — this ethos, first attributed to Aesop, has been central to the evolution of the Western worldview, having been invoked in contexts as diverse as Bible sermons and politicians’ speeches. And while the West still cites unity as the bedrock of its policies, Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have started exploring a different kind of unity, one that doesn’t require the sameness of values or uniformity of action. What kind of unity has a better chance against a global fall? To discuss this, Oksana is joined by Mikatekiso Kubayi, Research Fellow at the Institute for Pan-African Thought and Conversation and Researcher at the Institute for Global Dialogue associated with UNISA.
