Dr. Sucharit Bhakdi, is a German immunologist. He is Professor emeritus of the University of Mainz, where he served as the chair of the department of medical microbiology and hygiene from 1991 to 2012.From 1990 to 2012, he served as Editor in Chief of Medical Microbiology and Immunology.

Bhakdi is known for his work on the complement system, a part of the human immune system, a work for which he was awarded the Aronson Prize in 2001, as well as several other scientific prizes. He later applied his results to develop a new theory about the nature of atherosclerosis.
