The Seventh Day: (4/5) Escaping from the Darkness of the Middle Ages

As the western world began to awake from the darkness of the Middle Ages, revolutionary ideas sprang up in diverse places. 15th-century Russia saw a revival of Sabbath-keeping in a revolutionary movement that reached as far as the ruling elite. While the main thrust of the Protestant Reformation did not involve the Sabbath, a revival of Sabbath observance was a key part of the Radical Reformation in eastern Europe. Roman Catholic leaders, who claimed that their church had replaced the Sabbath with Sunday, saw Protestant acquiescence to Sunday observance as recognition of the authority of the Church of Rome.
