The Seventh Day: (2/5) Sabbath Observance During The Lifetime Of Jesus

During the lifetime of Jesus Christ, traditional Sabbath observance included many regulations that had been formulated by Jewish rabbis. Jesus did not agree with the restrictive rules of the rabbis and, by word and deed, taught a different kind Sabbath keeping. He claimed that He Himself was Lord of the Sabbath. This put Him in direct conflict with the religious leaders and intensified their opposition to His message and mission. During the early Christian centuries opposition to the seventh-day Sabbath came in the form of anti-semitism, and some Christians began to observe the first day of the week as their "holy" day. However, seventh-day Sabbath observance did survive for many centuries in some parts of the Christian world.
