The total lack of concern by the woman with the gun is really amazing.
Bellmead police were trying to identify a woman seen on video Friday shooting at a fleeing man suspected of trying to snatch an elderly woman’s purse.

The man was subdued just afterward by a group of residents and arrested by Bellmead police.

Several people allegedly saw Andre Dawson, 27, grab a purse out of a shopping basket as two women — one age 85, one younger — were unloading it in the north edge of the Wal-Mart parking lot at 1521 Interstate 35. Dawson was chased down by witnesses who held him on the ground for a short time, but he struggled to free himself and began to run again.

That was when an armed woman — seen in the video pointing a handgun at Dawson during the struggle — fired a shot in his direction from several feet away. Although the bullet missed Dawson, he fell down, got back up and continued to run before the witnesses again tackled him and held him until police arrived moments later.

It was unclear whether the woman who fired the gun intended to shoot Dawson or was firing a warning shot. It was also not known whether she was carrying the gun legally.

The woman who fired the gun left the scene before officers could talk to her, Bellmead police Detective Kory Martin said.

“We’re asking the lady or anyone who knows who she might be to contact police to help with the investigation,” Martin said. “At this time, we just want to identify her and talk to her to get her version of what happened.”

Police were still deciding Friday what charges to file against Dawson, he said.

A witness sent video of the tail end of the incident to the Tribune-Herald via Facebook. It shows Dawson breaking free and running, the woman firing the gun and Dawson again being tackled in the parking lot of American Bank adjacent to Wal-Mart. Police arrive, and the woman who fired the gun can be seen walking away from the scene.
