On September 11, 2001, a series of terrorist attacks were carried out against the United States. Four commercial airplanes were hijacked by members of the Islamic extremist group al-Qaeda. Two of the planes were flown into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, causing the buildings to collapse. A third plane was flown into the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, just outside of Washington, D.C. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was headed for a target in Washington, D.C., but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after passengers attempted to overcome the hijackers. The attacks resulted in the deaths of nearly 3,000 people, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in world history.
