Dr. MarkAlain Dery joins the show to discuss the current state of COVID-19 in the US. The historic spike in flu cases had raised fears of hospitals being overwhelmed by a “tripledemic” of flu, COVID-19 and RSV. But after soaring past the peaks of the worst flu seasons in years, cases fell for the sixth consecutive week during the week ending Jan. 14.

It is a real pleasure to welcome back to the program Mark Allen Derry. He is an infectious disease specialist at Access Health Louisiana. He's the host of the noise filter podcast which is a great one to check out folks for good information on covid and and and broader health issues. Mark Allen thanks so much for joining us and I really appreciate it because it seems like you've been working every day for like a month at this point. Tomorrow is 10 weeks. And hello Sam and hello Emma thank you, guys, so much it's been. It's been 10 weeks covering for another physician who's out on maternity leave. And so yeah so if I'm not here and there's no one else. So I have just been doing it and wouldn't be to Scotland in a week to Glasgow. To I'll still be working while I'm there. But at least we have a trip in mind here coming up very soon. Oh well glad to hear it. Yeah so lets I want to start with just one question then I want to go through some of the information you have on a deck with some graphics. But right now there's like two stories that are sort of running concurrently I mean maybe more. But one is that we're seeing a spike in covid in the wake of Thanksgiving and maybe just the winter months starting to happen. Like I know of multiple people in my sort of universe who have covid at the moment. And the other story is that, particularly on the Pediatric side but even more broadly is RSV and the flu. and RSV as far as I can tell is like a respiratory disease or virus. and it's very dangerous for kids. And there's there seem to be two different competing theories behind why we're seeing this sort of bump in RSV and the flu. And one is this notion that somehow because we masked and we're like took protocols to protect ourselves from covid there was what is known as an immunity debt that because we weren't as exposed to viruses that were our immune system sort of weakened in some ways. And then I see another argument that there really is no such thing as immunity debt and if you look at let's say New York compared to New York to let's say Florida where there was very little in Florida very little sort of I guess protocols the numbers of RSV and flu amongst kids are indistinguishable in some cases even higher in Florida. So that suggests that maybe covid has weakened people's immune system immune systems. what is your sense of this at this point?
