This is the moment a driver attempts to smash his way out from being restrained by police and, as a result, is shot and killed.

The incident took place at a 7-11 store at South Dobson in the city of Messer in Arizona when an employee called to say that a man appeared to be passed out in his truck outside.

Police attended the incident and found the man unresponsive and took 15 minutes trying to wake him and then after he woke, trying to persuade him to leave the vehicle.

They also used the sirens and their police megaphone to try and get him out of the grey Dodge truck.

They later use non-lethal rounds, including beanbags, to further drive the point home, again without effect.

When the man not only refused to get out, but then also attempted to drive away, narrowly missing running over one police officer and driving into the shop, they opened fire.

As a result, the driver, identified as 25-year-old Watts Williams, suffered critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Maricopa County Attorney's office is now investigating the shooting.
