Rogue Trooper Redux Missions 1 & 2 (No Commentary)
Rogue Trooper (2006) was developed by Rebellion, Rogue Trooper Redux (2017) was developed by TickTock Games and published by Eidos (Rogue Trooper 2006) and Rebellion (Redux)
Out of all possible ratings: Terrible, Bad, Average, Good, Great....
My rating, based upon my playthrough experience, is: Good!
Rogue Trooper was a very solid and extremely fun experience. There is a lot of fun to be had with the weapons and tools at your disposal, allowing you to eliminate your enemies in some very creative and fun ways. I haven't had this fun with a shooter in awhile, and that says a lot.
Aside from your standard shooting, running and gunning, and cover mechanics (Which worked very well for 2006) there is a lot of variety in the missions which keep things flowing nicely. It's not like MW2 (2022) where all the sudden you lost your weapons and have to craft shit (WTF?) to survive, which changes the game into a trial-and-error mess and ruins the flow of gameplay. Rogue Trooper keeps things smooth: Run and gun, turret defense, counter-sniping, laying ambushes, all flows naturally from one objective to the next.
If you want to sink your teeth in further, there are a few additional game modes to explore which act as icing on the cake. Nice to have but the single player campaign is the main draw here. I purchased this game in 2017 when it was new and couldn't get into a competitive multiplayer game back then, and during this playthrough I didn't even bother trying. Perhaps if you use Discord (I don't) you can find a Rogue Trooper Redux community, or perhaps on Steam, but don't expect joining games filled with randoms like CoD.
Let's breakdown the rating:
Graphics: TickTock Games managed to make a 2006 game look good in 2017. It's nowhere near the level of the Resident Evil 2 remake, but it's not a simple remaster (Where they just increase the resolution) either. Good job!
Controls: Given that this game was from 2006, this aspect surprised me the most. I never played the original, but the controls in Redux work great. If TickTock kept the controls the same, or changed little, it speaks volumes as to how well Rebellion nailed the controls in 2006. Few shooters from this era control this well, most were bumbling messes that tried to incorporate the ideas they did here, but Rebellion pulled it off. You should have no problem learning the controls.
Gameplay: Shoot stuff, blow stuff up, standard shooter stuff, right? Yep. It's all about how the developer manages your time and actions that make it enjoyable or not. Rebellion hit a sweet spot here between cover mechanics, running and gunning, very cool equipment uses, great weapons, and gameplay sequences and objectives like turret defenses that keep the game flowing very smoothly. The gameplay is like driving on a newly paved road, smooth and bump-free.
Sound: The voice acting can be very cringe at times, but the gun sounds, explosions, and environmental sounds range from great (Guns and explosions) to ok (Environmental sounds). There are no wimpy sounding guns and the sounds of combat are alive and well here.
Music: Sci-fi bits thrown in here and there. The music is not overly loud like the old Halo games but it's loud enough to be audible without being overbearing and blends well with the gameplay. There aren't any tunes that got stuck in my head, like Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, but these types of games aren't music heavy. The music is just another vehicle for immersion, and it works well in Rogue Trooper.
Story: You are a CRISPR-style genetically engineered "human" that is meant for one thing, and one thing only, war. Just like Halo's Spartans, but without the armor, because armor is for pussies :-o
Your invasion goes to shit, your buddies die, and you are the sole survivor left to uncover what happened. Overall, it is a revenge story, but pretty well done for a shooter of this type. We don't expect RPG level storytelling from shooters, but Rogue Trooper's plot is good.
Stability/Bugs: Zero crashes on PS4 and PS5. One bug was encountered whilst climbing which resulted in me passing through a solid wall, which got recorded. Minor issue, very minor. Overall, this game is solid!
Opinions: The only thing I didn't care for that much was the art direction. This is probably due to being faithful to the source material (I understand this was based off a comic book), but the drab blue and green color palette did start to wear on me. A little more sun would have been nice.
Rogue Trooper Redux is available on Xbox One, PS4, PC.
