"In God We Trust" is more than just the inscription on USA currency. It is legally the motto of the United States of America. And it doesn't go back to the founding of our country either. It was only in 1955 that this was first ordered to be put on all U.S.A. currency. Before that the inscription was the Latin, "E Pluribus Unum" which translates "Out of the many, one." Putting "In God We Trust" on USA money was ordered by the Federal Government (the 84th Congress) in 1955 and signed into law by President Dwight Eisenhower. A short time later in 1956 the same congress and same president put into law that this phrase would also be the official motto of the USA. I didn't even know the USA had an official motto. ACIM tells us in an early Workbook lesson, "God is the strength with which I trust." (OrEd.WkBk.47) I find it interesting that this early lesson from the spiritual discipline originated in the USA is in alignment with the motto of the USA. Let's challenge ourselves. Do we truly trust in God? Do we have faith? "Faithfulness is the teacher of God's trust in the word of God to set all things right – not some but all." (OrEd.Mn.4.21) The USA is grounded in this same faith. How well is the USA doing in being "faithful?" Maybe it's doing better than we think. Maybe we all are as well.
