Tapirs are herbivorous animals that eat young leaves along forests or riverbanks. The tapir has a pig-like body shape, rhino-like ears and a long, pangolin-like snout, while its groans sound more like birds than mammals.
The tapir's cruising range is very wide. Therefore, the existence of tapirs is often used as evidence for the theory of continental separation. Tapirs communicate with each other with high pitched squeaks and whistles.
Adult tapirs can have a body length of up to 225 cm and can be very fat, up to 300 kg.
