How do you do fantasy races well?
I mean what's the point of making "human but pointy ears" or "human but big eyes" or "human but short". Aren't they all just effectively "human" anyways?

The other route just involves making animal people. Ie. frog-humans, lizard-humans, bird-humans and that seems a bit silly, it just seems like you're taking animals but making them more human-like

A third route involves making something that isn't humanoid at all (like slimes) but that gets impractical from a gameplay perspective
