In this video, we’re going to discuss loneliness which has reached worldwide proportions, though we have countless ways of reaching out, following, Liking, and viewing one another. We’re going to examine what might lead people to feel lonely and what keeps some people stuck in a loneliness spiral, as well as how it’s connected to the development of borderline and schizoid PD. Is social media the cure for loneliness? Knowing these things is crucial for the development of well targeted successful interventions to prevent and lessen the effects of loneliness, we’ll discuss 3 effective strategies.

Satisfying social relationships are essential for mental and physical well-being. Impaired social relationship can lead to loneliness. Loneliness can lead to various psychiatric disorders like depression, alcohol abuse, child abuse, sleep problems, personality disorders and Alzheimer’s disease. It can also lead to various physical disorders like diabetes, autoimmune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and cardiovascular diseases like coronary heart disease, hypertension (HTN), obesity, physiological aging, cancer, poor hearing and poor health.

Loneliness is described as the difference between actual and desired social relationships. This can be in friendships, work relationships, family relationships, and romantic relationships. Research has examined differences in personality (e.g., extraversion), social skills (e.g., empathy, social anxiety), demographics (e.g., age), resources (e.g., time, money, availability of transport), physical mobility, and more. Personality disorders most likely to be associated with loneliness include borderline personality disorder and schizoid personality disorder. Intolerance of aloneness is considered a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD) and is directly related to the experience of loneliness.

It has been suggested that emotional deprivation plays a critical role in the development of schizoid personality disorder. Schizoid PD is a pattern of detachment from social relationships and a restricted range of emotional expression.

Social media use continues to grow and is especially prevalent among young adults. It is surprising then that, in spite of this enhanced interconnectivity, young adults may be lonelier than other age groups, and that the current generation may be the loneliest ever.

CBT strategies – modifying dysfunctional beliefs and self-defeating thoughts patterns has been found to be very effective. If you think negative things about yourself, stop, challenge it, and replace it with a positive and more balanced thought. This works if done routinely, one and done doesn’t apply here.

Social skills training that focuses on initiating, maintain, and ending relationships. This is very challenging for many individuals, especially for those with BPD.

Social support – this is IRL supports. People you can talk to and have a back and forth interaction with. These are folks you can be open and honest with, many people with BPD feel they don’t have this, but this is what a mental health provider is for.
