Why are Parents Nowadays Wannabe Friends?

Let me start by saying that I’m not a parent and this post is from a third party’s perspective. It is said that parenting is one of the hardest jobs in the world and I will assume that this is correct.

It seems so hard that nowadays parents want to be their kids' friends instead of a traditional authority figure. But why? I don’t understand what good can come out of this decision...

Are they trying to relive their childhood or just trying to stay cool?
