Naturevore: FLORIDA FORAGING Walk #17 (Jan. 1): Sparkleberry, KALAWALLA, and a NEW PURPLE MUSHROOM!

Collin Gow, C.N.C. and his son go foraging in Florida on a wildlife trail. Together they identify and discuss wild edible plants, lichens, and fungi and their ethnomedicinal uses, biological actions, and health benefits. Special new finds include partridgeberry, sparkleberry (farkleberry), kalawalla (calaguala) fern, the purple colored Cortinarius violaceus (Violet Cort) mushroom (not to be confused with C. alboviolaceus aka Silvery-violet Cort or C. iodes aka Viscid Violet Cort), and some new unidentified mushrooms. Tons of gotu kola is seen along the trail as well. Subjects such as botany, mycology, morphology, phenology, health, nutrition, phytochemistry, ethnopharmacology, folk medicine, traditional medicine, natural medicine, and Native American (American Indian) medicine are casually discussed.

*Correction: we appear to see Kalawalla 3 times in this video, however, our first viewing is actually another fern called Resurrection Fern, not Kalawalla. The second two showings are Kalawalla. Resurrection fern is smaller than Kalawalla.
