Oak Hill Church of Christ 7-10-22 Message: "Superiority Complex"

Oak Hill Church of Christ preaching minister, Randy Sterling, delivers a message on the importance of remaining humble in a world that seems to invite prideful living.

The Biblical story of King David is often shown to illustrate how to be a good follower of God. David was a good example of being softhearted enough to turn from sin when called on his bad behavior by God. But, the majority of David's mistakes seemed to be made in one specific area: his pride.

As a King, David transitioned away from being the plucky, humble shepherd boy and into the sedentary, officious bureaucrat. At the height of his reign, David spent more of his time in his palace than out in the field with his men or among the people. The majority of his actions were not actions, but, rather, commands to other people to take action.

Sometimes success can go to our heads. We begin to believe that perhaps we are more special and more important and more valuable than we earlier allowed ourselves to believe. We bought into our own press and it is often (as it was for David) those times where we are more apt to make mistakes and sin. Pride gets the better of us and we fall.

Consider the story of David and, indeed, other stories in the Bible of those individuals who sin after their rise to power, and take them as a lesson to be introspective. Turn from pride and toward humility before God. Resist the urge to sin through the exploitation of your skill or influence, and instead, consider how God might put you to a holy use.
