Hello friends and welcome to the world of power animals. Today we’ll look at the scorpion. There are over 2500 species of scorpions that have been around since before the dinosaurs. The fearful looking scorpion has a pair of front pincers, 8 legs, and a tail tipped with a venomous stinger. Scorpions are common in deserts but have adapted to mountains, forests, and open grasslands. They emerge from their burrows at night to find insects for food. They can sense tiny ground vibrations to determine the exact distance and direction of their prey. Most scorpions are sit-and-wait predators that remain motionless until a suitable victim is ambushed and stung. They are fiercely determined and quick but are not worried since they can survive long periods without food or water.
Linked to the constellation and astrological sign of Scorpio, the mystical scorpion is referenced in many folklores and mythologies. The image of a scorpion brings discomfort with a large dose of respect to anyone who sees it. In contrast, when they mate, they have a romantic courtship ritual dance where the male eventually leaves his sperm in a packet on the ground and tries to get the female to go over it. The female’s gestation period is a full 18 months after which she gives birth to many babies that start out by living on top of their mother.

The secretive scorpion is very adaptable. They’re symbols of solitude, defense, protection, death, and rebirth. Call on their spirit when you want to handle a challenge with more inner strength.
