To survive in fresh water, fish need physiological adaptations aimed at maintaining a balance of ion concentrations in the body. This is due to the rapid speciation that makes scattered habitats possible to live in. Until now, the number of fish in the world has been identified as many as 24,618 species, and 40 percent of them are freshwater fish.
