The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives had a ban in place to limit the use of bump stocks, devices that allow semiautomatic rifles to fire continuously with one pull of the trigger. However, a majority of the full US 5th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that bump stocks were not covered by the law. This ban had been put in place by the Trump administration in 2019 after a mass shooting in Las Vegas where a shooter armed with semiautomatic weapons and bump stock devices opened fire onto outdoor concertgoers, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds of others.
