MCCARTHY WINS SPEAKER AFTER 15 VOTES

Kevin McCarthy finally won the position of speaker of the house of representatives after a long 15 rounds of voting. McCarthy won the 15th vote on the night of January 6th, 2023. McCarthy narrowly lost the 14th round of voting by a few votes. McCarthy had to make some concessions and deals with the conservative holdouts of the freedom caucus. Some of the concessions McCarthy made include the ability for any republican member to issue a vote of not confidence in the speaker. As well as the passage of bills focused on conservative issues such as the border, government spending and terms limits. Also, McCarthy agreed to some measures that would limit the power of the speaker. Kevin McCarthy was able to get several holdouts to vote for him with these concessions. Gaetz was the final vote that McCarthy needed. After a call from Trump, Gaetz voted for McCarthy, making him speaker of the house.

It has been an eventful contest for speaker on behalf of the freedom caucus members, including Matt Gaetz and Lauren Boebert. Now that congress has a speaker, Republicans can begin doing the work people voted them in for.
