People Doing Harm With Words

Is assuming an individuals gender, or using the wrong one, harmful? Is harm subjective? In today's day and age, I'm inclined to believe so. I think the word "harm" has been coopted in a sense. Now, it can really mean anything you want it to. You looking at someone the wrong way might be harmful. Your tone, lack of eye contact, too much eye contact etc are all fair game now. Is that a bit of an exaggeration? Yeah, but it's a reality for some. That's what worries me. And if we start judging everything on this moving scale of what harm is for each person, we'll never be able to have an honest conversation again.
