MICHIGAN House Bill 6544 The assault weapon ban bill. Sponsored by Representative Jeffrey Pepper and interduce on December 1st 2022 .
This bill aims to ban the manufacture, possession, purchase, and sale of assault weapons in the state of Michigan. "Assault weapon" is defined as a semiautomatic rifle that can accept a detachable magazine and has certain physical characteristics such as a pistol grip or folding stock. The ban will go into effect on January 1, 2024, with a few exceptions. People who legally possessed an assault weapon before the effective date of the ban may continue to possess it if they register the weapon with the state police and renew the registration every 5 years. Violating the ban is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison. The state police will be responsible for implementing the act through rules promulgated under the administrative procedures act.
