* It should be noted that, while tuba parts are provided for the B-flat version of the piece, the range is rather high for the instrument, and the solo may not be suitable for players of all levels.

Performance Notes:
The poetry of the favorite carol, “O Holy Night,” was written in1843, by Placide Cappeau and then set to music by Adolphe Adam in 1847. The words were later translated by John Sullivan Dwight into English and verses were added, including a third verse portraying Christ as a breaker of chains—a message which was very much in line with that of the abolitionists of the time. It begins with the lines, “Truly He taught us to love one another; His law is love and His gospel is peace,” and in this arrangement, special attention is given to that passage. The piece is gently flowing and noble. Even at the higher dynamics, a sense of reverence should pervade.
