With the 118th congress now in session, a new speaker for the house of representatives is going to be elected. Kevin McCarthy, the minority leader of the congressional republicans, is seeking the position. Although a handful of GOP congressmen need to be convinced to vote for McCarthy to be elected speaker of the house or representatives. Republicans have a slim majority in the house, 222-212. Republicans need to unify to make sure they have are effective in the house. Even influential republican Marjorie Taylor Greene from north west Georgia is supporting McCarthy for Speaker.

Several republican holdouts cast their vote for Jim Jordan, congressman from Ohio. Jordan is a popular congressman nationally among conservatives. President Donald Trump has supported Jim Jordan. The house democrats have recently selected Hakeem Jeffries to be the party leader. Jeffries received 212 votes. The democrat party is unified behind their house leader, while there is some internal debate among republicans. There is no likely situation where Jeffries gets elected speaker, unless a handful of republicans vote democrat.
