'HONOUR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER'
TEXT: EXODUS 20:12

INTRODUCTION: The subject of honouring our parents is of onegreat importance. One reason for its importance is that both the Old Testament and New Testament command us to honour our parents. It is the fifth of the ten commandments. The first four reflect man’s responsibility before God, while the last six reflect man’s responsibility before his fellow man, starting with the command to honour our parents. This command does not cease when one leaves home to get married and start a family. No, it is lifelong. This commandment must be taken seriously, not only because it is a matter of Old Testament revelation, but because the obligation to honour our parents is also clearly reiterated and reinforced in the New Testament. Jesus reiterated it and the Apostle Paul reiterated it. Honouring our parents is a foundational part of life.

I. THERE IS A RESPECT THAT IS DEMANDED
A. AN ELEVATION TO RECOGNIZE
B. AN ESTEEM TO RENDER

II. THERE IS A RESPECT THAT IS DESERVED
A. BY OUR FAITHFULNESS
B. BY OUR FAIRNESS
C. BY OUR FRUITFULNESS

III. THERE IS A REWARD THAT DELIVERED
A. OUR DAYS WILL BE LENGTHENED
B. OUR DAYS WILL BE LIGHTENED

CONCLUSION: In reflecting back on my own life there was no doubt that I was at times a disobedient child. At times, I believed I did not render unto my parents the honour rightfully due them. Although, since coming to Christ I’ve endeavoured to do this. May you endeavour to do this too.
