Brazil officially has a familiar new president. Luiz Inácio "Lula" da Silva was sworn in for a third term on Sunday after a 12-year hiatus.

De Silva’s predecessor Jair Bolsonaro refused to accept the results leading to fears of potential threats to the peaceful transfer of power. Bolsonaro subsequently broke tradition by leaving the country on inauguration day and missing the customary practice of passing on the presidential sash.

As de Silva steps into power, he hopes to address food insecurity, the economy, and inequality.
