Canadiens put up a good fight, but succumb 8-4 to Capitals' onslaught
Montreal battled back to within a goal two times, but goaltender Sam Montembeault was peppered with 41 shots and only stopped 33.
Canadiens goalie Sam Montembeault makes a pad save against Washington Capitals' Tom Wilson (43) at the Bell Centre on Saturday, April 16, 2022, in Montreal.
The plucky Canadiens tried to keep the game close, but the Washington Capitals had too much firepower Saturday as they cruised to an 8-4 win at the Bell Centre.
Ryan Poehling’s second goal of the game early in the third period brought Montreal to within a goal for the second time in the game, but Garnet Hathaway scored 46 seconds later. The Capitals got insurance goals from Dmitry Orlov, Justin Schultz and T.J. Oshie with the last two goals coming on the power play.
With the win, the Capitals all but wrapped up the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. They opened a 15-point edge over the ninth-place New York Islanders, whose only hope is to win their eight remaining games, while the Capitals lose their last seven.
Montreal, which lost its fifth consecutive game, remains in 31st place overall. Canadiens goaltender Sam Montembeault was beaten eight times on 41 shots.
The Canadiens did a good job of killing a holding penalty to David Savard midway through the first period. They held the Capitals to one shot on goal and created a scoring chance when Poehling had a short-handed breakaway.
But Savard was back on the ice for only a dozen seconds when Nic Dowd deflected Orlov’s shot from the blue line for his 10th goal of the season.
The Canadiens thought they had a power-play goal a few minutes later when Rem Pitlick was in front to field the rebound of Corey Schueneman’s shot from the blue line. The apparent goal was waved off when officials ruled Pitlick kicked the loose puck into the net and that ruling was confirmed by the situation room in Toronto after a video review.
Montreal scored a goal that counted early in the second period. Savard cleared the puck and Christian Dvorak passed behind his back as he crossed the blue line and found Jakes Evans in full flight on the right wing. Evans beat Vitek Vanecek with a shot to the far post for his 11th goal.
The game opened up after Josh Anderson and Nicklas Backstrom went off with coincidental minor penalties at 7:47. With the teams playing four-on-four, they combined for three goals in a 49-second span.
Longueuil native Anthony Mantha opened a two-goal lead for the Capitals when he followed his own rebound and scored at 8:03 and then scored off the rush at 8:37. Mantha, the grandson of four-time Stanley Cup winner André Pronovost, has been working his way back into a prominent role with the Capitals after missing four months with a shoulder injury that required surgery. Former Canadien Lars Eller assisted on both of Mantha’s goals.
Poehling completed the mid-period scoring spree when he beat Vanecek at 8:51.
Alex Ovechkin, who is chasing a record-tying ninth 50-goal season, restored Washington’s two-goal lead late in the second period. Evgeny Kuznetsov set him up in the slot for his 47th of the season.
Nick Suzuki scored his 20th goal late in the game.
The Canadiens killed three penalties in the second period, including a 5-on-3 Washington advantage for 1:14.
Montreal wraps up a four-game homestand with games Tuesday against the Minnesota Wild and Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers, before finishing the week with a road game against the Ottawa Senators.
