Dorothea Helen Gray, also known as Dorothea Puente, was born in 1929 in California. She was dubbed as the "Death House Landlady." Her parents were both alcoholics and she was sexually abused in an orphanage after they lost custody of her and her siblings. She married and had two daughters before divorcing and being arrested for forgery. She married a merchant seaman and used a fake Muslim identity, inviting men to their home and gambling away her husband's money. She was arrested for running a brothel and later divorced her husband, who had her committed to a mental hospital. She married again and ran a boarding house in Sacramento, California, where she helped homeless and mentally ill people. In 1982, one of her tenants died from an overdose and Puente began burying bodies in the yard of her boarding house. She was arrested in 1988 and convicted of three murders, with a possibility of two more.
