According to The Federation of American Scientists, only nine countries control the world's approximately 12,700 nuclear warheads (FAS)

While President Joe Biden has stated that Americans should not be frightened about nuclear war, Pentagon officials are apparently attempting to establish a backchannel with Russian military leaders in order to avoid the invasion from developing into nuclear warfare.
The Arms Control Association's executive director, Daryl Kimball, recently told The Associated Press that "the United States, President Biden, and NATO must act with utmost prudence."
"This is a very dangerous point in the crisis, and we must persuade our leaders to back away from the nuclear option," Kimball warned.
Nine countries, including the US, have stockpiled nuclear weapons for decades. The number of inventory has been slowly decreasing worldwide, according to a Federation of American Scientists report. Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty was designed to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and technology.
