A Belarusian court on Monday sentenced in absentia former Olympic swimmer Aliaksandra Herasimenia and political activist Alexander Opeykin to 12 years in prison over their role in protests against President Alexander Lukashenko. They were found guilty of "causing harm to the national security of Belarus". Belarus saw widespread protests after Lukashenko's disputed re-election in August 2020.
