Rome was by far for a very long time the largest city in the world in ancient times. Depending on which sources you consult, it is written that Rome had anywhere from 1 million to even 2 million inhabitants during its peak. Using archeological evidence and records of how much grain and pork was supplied in different times, we can reconstruct that the most probable number of inhabitants must have been from 800,000 to 1.2 million inhabitants in the time of Augustus, so around the birth of Christ.
