In 1579, an African man named Yasuke traveled to Japan with an Italian priest named Alessandro Valignano. The priest had Yasuke working for him as a bodyguard. When they got to Japan and met the daimyo, Oda Nobunaga, Valignano gifted Yasuke to him, setting him on a path to become the first known African samurai.
