Ravinder Singh was found not guilty of criminally negligent homicide in the death of 30-year-old Margarita “Maggie” Brooks.
A former Arlington police officer was acquitted Monday in the 2019 fatal shooting of a woman whose dog charged at him.

A Tarrant County jury found Ravinder Singh not guilty of criminally negligent homicide. Singh shot Margarita “Maggie” Brooks, 30, in the chest while aiming at her dog.
Singh was among the officers who responded the afternoon of Aug. 1, 2019, to a call about a woman passed out in a grassy area near a shopping center at North Collins Street and Cantor Drive.
Body camera footage showed Singh approach Brooks and ask whether she was OK. Her dog then runs at Singh, who backpedals. Singh fires three shots, grazing the dog and hitting Brooks. She later died at a hospital.

She yelled in the footage. “Oh my God! Police shot me!”

Singh resigned from the Arlington Police Department and was indicted on a charge of criminally negligent homicide in September 2020.

In a statement, the Tarrant County district attorney’s office said the jury “evaluated the testimony and evidence and determined that Ravinder Singh was not guilty. By doing so, the jury fulfilled their duty in the criminal justice system, as did we.”

The Fort Worth Star Telegram reported the jury of eight women and four men deliberated for about 10 hours before delivering its not-guilty verdict after a four day trial.

Singh’s lawyers argued he had a reasonable fear he and Brooks would be mauled by the dog at the time of the shooting.
