AMVETS, formally called American Veterans of World War II, Korea, and Vietnam, also known as American Veterans, is the largest and oldest veterans service organization open to and fights for all veterans and their families. Established on December 10, 1944, and currently comprises 250,000 members and growing. Assyrian Americans were the first to establish an AMVET post in Illinois and the second group to set up an AMVET post in the continental United States, with AMVET post #5 based in Chicago.
