Then they are joined by Sarah Moran, the U.S. Country Director for GiveDirectly to discuss their work on guaranteed income initiatives. Sarah Moran then jumps right into the work that GiveDirectly has been engaging in over the last decade, exploring the nature of the program as an argument-in-action on why direct cash assistance works, walking through where the over 500mln in cash assistance has gone, and how, no matter the community, the money consistently goes to the primary needs of family and community. Next, she dives into the role of the “multiplier” effect on local economies, as the assistance is returned to the economy 2.6x fold, before they wrap up the interview by tackling GiveDirectly’s work alongside local governments and why it must be a supplement, rather than an alternative, to social welfare systems.

Joining us now is Sarah Moran. She is the U.S. country director for giving directions. Sarah thanks so much for joining us. Yeah, thanks for having me. So I love your charity and I was just asking like I maybe was a year or two ago we were doing some ads for giving well. And I went to give well to find and that's where I found give directly. No no relationship other than give I guess in your first name. And eat tell us what gives directly does at least broadly speaking then we'll talk about the sort of the theory behind it. Yeah definitely. So giving directly does exactly what it says on the box: we give unconditional cash to people living in extreme poverty around the world. We've been doing that for over a decade. And we've reached over 580 million people in those 10 years with unconditional cash. That's all we do. And it's just to me it's like the most straightforward thing that the charity could possibly do. And yet from my experience, there's a lot of resistance to this kind of concept rooted in things like paternalism and condescension frankly. Like was circumventing that stuff Paramount for your guys and your founding and your mission? I think we were founded by economists who saw the opportunity to make a really strong economic argument about why cash works and how it works for people. The idea behind the founding of giving directly was to take the most direct line to alleviate poverty. and if poverty is defined by how much income you have then giving people income will definitionally raise them out of poverty. But I think in the 10 years that we've been working there have been over 300 studies that have shown other positive impacts of cash on Health education on family Family Dynamics intimate partner violence all sorts of things. so the spillover effects of cash are huge and I think that's been a big reason that we've been able to get momentum around this work.
