Consider yourself lucky when you land a long layover in Hong Kong, China, because you’ll have just enough time to explore the magnificent harbor city. Ready to ditch the airport terminal and paint the town red before your next flight? Delve into the culture, visit the hottest attractions, and nosh on some local grub to get a taste of the Pearl of the Orient.

When you only have one day in Hong Kong, make Victoria Peak the first stop on your itinerary. As you venture to the top of the highest mountain on Hong Kong Island, you’re in for a real treat—the sweeping city views. At its peak, you’ll find a viewing deck, restaurants, and even shopping centers. For your next stop, make a beeline to the Tian Tan Buddha, located on Lantau Island. Standing 112 feet tall, the gigantic bronze statue sits on a lotus, surrounded by The Offering of the Six Devas statues. While you’re in town, hitch a ride on the Ngong Ping 360 cable car over the Tung Chung Bay, search for the Bruce Lee statue along the Avenue of Stars, and try some authentic dim sum. If you still have time to spare, climb aboard a junk and cruise around the archipelago of 260 islands.

Don’t underestimate 24 hours in Hong Kong. Take advantage of your layover and soak up the culture outside of the airport.
