Is Egypt in the Bible?

Egypt is a land of wonder and the home to one of the greatest ancient civilisations in history. But for many people, Egypt is most famous for the pyramids and the sphinx that rise from the sandy plains at Giza near Cairo's capital city.

But is Egypt in the Bible? Yes, Egypt is one of the most mentioned locations in the Bible after Israel. Egypt is mentioned almost seven hundred times in the Old Testament and another twenty-five times in the New Testament.

Some of the most famous stories in the Bible that mention the country of Egypt are:
- Abraham and Sarah visit Egypt. (Genesis 12)
- Joseph sold to traders who took him to Egypt. (Genesis 37)
- Joseph was the second ruler of Egypt. (Genesis 41)
- During a famine, Joseph's family moves to Egypt. (Genesis 47)
- Joseph dies in Egypt. (Genesis 50)
- The children of Israel have been in slavery in Egypt for 430 years. (Exodus 1)
- Moses is born and hidden in the reeds and found by an Egyptian princess. (Exodus 2)
- The 10 Plagues in Egypt. (Exodus 7-11)
- The Exodus – the Israelites are leaving Egypt. (Exodus 12:31-50)
- The Ten Commandments are given at Mt Sinai. (Exodus 20)
- Jesus and His family escape from Herod and flee to Egypt. (Matthew 2:13-23)
- King Solomon married an Egyptian princess. (I Kings 3:1)
- Shishak, king of Egypt, attacked Jerusalem. (I Kings 14)
