The EcoDiesel engine in the RAM 1500 trucks is getting discontinued and production will end in January of 2023. I talk about why the 3.0L V6 Eco diesel failed and what this might mean for modern diesel engines in other 1500 pick up trucks.

I hope everyone has had a great weekend! Today I'm chatting once again about the notorious ram 1500 ecodiesel engine. RAM has officially announced that January 2023 will be the ending of production for the 3 liter eco diesel engine. and with this announcement I figured we could talk a little about why they felt the need to discontinue this engine.

so firstly it's probably not a surprise to many of you that as a heavy duty diesel mechanic I didn't think this engine was any good to start out with. overall it's a pretty light duty marine engine that was not disigned to be used in a pick up truck.

secondly it seemed like RAM was railroaded into making this engine and its emission compliant with the new epa emissions regulation when this engine first debut in 2014. I don't think ram could of seen the emission issues that where to come in the future with the ecodiesel when they were developing the engine for the ram 1500.

I think RAM had the right idea to bring a fuel efficient small diesel engine into the ram 1500 lineup but still have the ability to tow almost 8,000lbs with over 400 foot pounds of torque. on paper it seemed like the best of both world in a pick up truck.

now the application of this idea is where RAM failed. but still they were the first manufacture to put a modern diesel into their 1500 line up and both the other big manufactures followed.

today I think the fact that diesel fuel prices are so high and the mounting issues with the Eco diesel tripled with the upcoming release of the 3.0L twin turbo hurricane gas engine made it an easy decision to put the engine in the ground.

over its 8 year span there were many issues but some people did seem to like them and I personally tried one out and tested it's fuel economy. they were without a doubt very efficient.

lastly I think the modern diesel engine is starting to show it's weakness because of the increase emission system complicity and break downs. it will be interesting to see what happens to other diesel engines as time goes on!

I hope you guys liked the video!
