Johnny Cash is one of Country Music’s most legendary figures. His deep baritone voice and evocative lyrics made him the voice of the everyman. From his infamous concert at Folsom Prison in 1968 to his final acoustic gigs in the 90s and early 2000s, Cash could be seen playing Martin Guitars. In 1989, Cash ordered a custom Martin D-35. Fittingly, he wanted it in a custom all-black finish. The company’s then-president C.F. Martin III believed an all-black guitar to be too radical and nixed the idea. However, the guitar was built secretly, and Martin III had no idea the guitar had been made until he saw Cash playing it on Television.
