Performance Notes:

This much-loved song, believed to be 750 or more years old, has been sung each evening of Hanukkah, after the lighting of the menorah. Above is the first of six verses to the poetry. It is a song of praise to Yahweh, on a holiday which celebrates the Miracle of the Cruse of Oil—that, upon reclaiming the Temple in Jerusalem in the Maccabean Revolt, a container of oil that would have been enough to light their ritual lamp for one day lasted for eight days.
This setting is framed in a contemporary pop style. Both the pianist and soloist, when playing rhythmical elements, should play very metrically. Syncopations should be (very lightly) weighted, but still understated. The melodic passages should be rhythmically semplice, but espressivo, nonetheless. While it is not marked in this way, the soloist may choose to play the figures at bars 47-48 and 49-50 a bit out of tempo, a piacere. Or they may be simply played in time.
