FLASHBACK to 2021: Expert says illegal handguns, NOT lawful semi-auto rifles or long guns, to blame

In February 2021, well before Marco Mendicino took over the Liberal gun control file, University of Toronto sociology associate professor Jooyoung Lee, an expert on gun violence, said the federal government needed to look at the root causes of gun violence and invest in vulnerable communities.

Based on his knowledge and experience, Mr. Lee suggested Bill C-21 wouldn't have any measurable impact on gun crime as previous measures like it haven't historically.

Mr. Lee said some of the root causes of gun violence are:
- Urban poverty
- Racial marginalization
- Lack of opportunity

He also pointed to known crime gun statistics:
- The vast majority of guns used in street crime or DV are handguns
- Of those, 80-90% of them, are illegally obtained (smuggled) from the USA
- semi-automatic rifles and long guns are rarely used in crime

When asked what the federal government SHOULD be doing he said they should be looking into creating:
- Safety nets around vulnerable youth
- Increasing education and mentoring opportunities
