'CROATIA WILL WIN WORLD CUP!' | Modric vows as 80,000 fans greet team in Zagreb

Around 80,000 revellers braved the winter cold in Croatia's capital Zagreb on Sunday to take part in a hero's welcome for the national football team which finished third in this year's World Cup.

The team, captained by Real Madrid's 37-year-old midfielder Luka Modric, created a sensation in the tournament by knocking out favourites Brazil on penalties to reach the semi-final for only the third time in the young nation's history.

After being knocked out by Argentina and then beating Morocco 2-1 in the third-place match on Saturday, Croatia secured a bronze medal, equalling the success of the 1998 generation in France butstopping short of silver they won in 2018 in Russia.

For Modric, considered a talisman of the Croatia team, this was probably his last outing on the world's largest football stage, although he confirmed that he plans to keep playing international football until at least the final four of the Nations League tournament, to be played in June 2023 and featuring Croatia, Italy, Netherlands, and Spain.

Even without Modric, the team's future looks bright, with breakout stars such as RB Leipzig's Josko Gvardiol, Celtic's Josip Juranovic and Dinamo Zagreb's goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic earning legions of new fans after their performances in Qatar.
